Story of St Anne’s

Joining in God’s mission to reach the people of Grantham with the good news of Jesus Christ has always been the story of our church. The first St Anne’s Church was a tin tabernacle built from corrugated iron and dedicated as a mission church in 1884. 22 years later in 1906, work began on the building we use today and in 1911 our red brick home was opened with Edwin Millard licensed as the vicar (he served in his post for 39 years!).

For the last 140 years, St Anne’s Church has sought to be at the heart of this community and to hold out the good news of Jesus. Our church hall has seen generations of work with children and teenagers, and has hosted more church fêtes and many community events than anyone can remember. There have been seasons of growth and plenty and seasons of struggle but we firmly believe that our best days are ahead of us.

The Covid years were hard and lean years for us as a church and many here prayed continuously that the Lord would look kindly upon St Anne’s and the life and vibrancy this church had known for so many years would return. Around this time, the Diocese of Lincoln chose Grantham to be the location of a church ‘revitalisation’ project with an injection of people, energy and support from St George’s Church in Stamford, but the location of this project was yet to be decided. As members at St George’s joined St Anne’s in prayer over the location of this project, God moved in power and made a way for St Anne’s to be the home of this project.

In September 2023, a church-planting team led by Rev Andy Acheson arrived in Grantham to join with the existing church family. All long-standing members and the new arrivals met to identify our core values and our mission here. We spent time seeking the Lord’s heart for who he was calling us to be; with two core convictions that we all shared: that we would be a united church, one church, and be bold in sharing Jesus. You can read more about our vision and values here.

Since that time, we are so thankful to God that our church community has grown in number and love for one another, and that we get to be to part of God’s mission to reach Grantham for the Lord Jesus.
